CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

________________________________

TRISTAN

Anxiety built up in my chest as I dashed through the hallways, blindly following the scent that had been imprinted in my mind since I turned eighteen. I didn’t even know where I was going until I ended up in front of a door. Absent-mindedly, I halted, freezing in my spot.

My nose had led me straight to the basement where my brother had stored all the photos of Zahra and me.

Of course, she would come here. She must’ve learned from Circe about the existence of this place.

I sucked in a sharp breath, mentally preparing myself. Whatever happened now would determine our future; she could either take me back, or dump me for good. Aware of the likelihood of the latter happening, I took another minute just to enjoy my last seconds living in a world where she hadn’t completely given up on us yet.

Cypress didn’t approve of my insecurity. He pushed forward just enough to lend me a bit of his strength, and I was suddenly flooded with determination. This could be my final battle, but I never backed away from a fight.

Once I had gathered my courage, I took a step forward. Then another. I slowly made my way down the stairs, not backing away when I noticed the dim light at the end of my path.

It wasn’t long before I noticed Zahra’s delicate frame. She had her back to me as she analyzed what I could only assume was one of the many portraits lying across the stone chamber. My knees felt weak when I inevitably remembered the poor condition she had been in after the rejection. I don’t think I’d ever be able to get that image out of my mind; but even worse, I knew the pain I had experienced through her memory would haunt me until my dying day.

I stopped a few feet away from her, planning my next move, but she was faster.

“I knew you’d follow me here.”

Her usually silky voice was emotionless. It sent shivers down my spine. She didn’t bother turning to look at me, so I couldn’t read her expression. But she was expecting me, and instead of running away, she waited. It gave me a tiny bit of hope.

With my heart drumming in my chest, I took a brave step in her direction. “You probably hate me right now, and you have every right to. But if you could just listen to me-”

“I didn’t bring you here to talk,” she cut me off coldly. “You forfeit that right when you rejected me and left.” With those words, she finally turned around to face me.

A gasp of horror broke through my lips when I realized what she really had in her hands - a box of matches.

“I needed you here to watch…” Giving me no time to think, she struck a match, tossing it over a pile of portraits. “Watch our past go up in flames.”

“No!” I screamed desperately as the first spark of fire was reflected in my eyes. Without thinking, I rushed over to her, dropping to my knees.
